The aim of the course:
1.) To address the current state of the art in academic research on effects of CKD on morbidity, functional capacity and exercise training (day 1).
2.) To provide a hands-on approach to assessment of functional capacity and prescription of exercise training in the clinical setting (day 2).
The first day will provide an overview of the effects of functional capacity and exercise training on morbidity and mortality, cardiac function and the autonomic nervous system, skeletal muscle and health related quality of life in patients with CKD stages 4-5, during maintenance dialysis and after renal transplantation. The second day will focus on assessment of functional capacity, prescription of exercise training for the very frail to the physically fit patient, how to motivate patients and which precautions to take. Day 1 includes a “meet the experts” session addressing theoretical aspects of physical dysfunction in CKD and day 2 includes a “hands-on” session in the department’s renal gym with the opportunity to discuss with renal physiotherapists and meet CKD patients in action.
