Nephrology network

Nephrology is a distinct specialization in France. However, most of the nephrologists think that the field of chronic renal failure excludes hospitalization in other places than nephrology units (Soc Nephrol) and play the role of internist.
Nephrology is almost always performed in hospitals. It was first individualized during the years 1965-1975 in university centres (CHU - Centre Hospitalier Universitaire), then in other public hospitals (CHG - Centre Hospitalier Général). Nephrology units are quite rare in private institutions (Cliniques).

A study realized in 1992 showed that hospitalizations in nephrology units are distributed between

- CHU: 998 beds
- CHG: 791 beds
- Private: 218 beds.
