This secondary analysis from a large cohort study, ARIC Study, shows that, like in non-chronic kidney disease, in chronic kidney disease obesity increases the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. However, the overall effect of obesity on mortality is modified by the presence of chronic kidney disease. In CKD, some potential benefits from a higher body size (perhaps less malnutrition) seems to neutralize its deleterious metabolic effects so that mortality does not increase with higher BMI in patients with BMI over 25 kg/m2.
