In a random sample of all subjects initiating dialysis in Canada between 1 January 1990 and 31 December 2000 the authors found that patients of East or Indo Asian origin receiving dialysis had lower rates of renal transplantation than their white counterparts, especially for living donor transplantation. These lower rates were independent of blood group types, comorbidity and socioeconomic status. On the other hand, the adjusted mortality rate in Indo Asian was lower than in whites. These findings deserve further study to explore the causes of the inequity in access to transplantation and their different outcomes. |
