Aim of the course:

The complement system is a major player of our innate immune defense and is directly involved in many beneficial and less beneficial effects, such as microbial defense or host tissue injury.

The aim of this one full day advanced course is to provide clinicians and basic scientists a full overview of the role of complement in renal disease and transplantation. The course will cover basic mechanisms of complement activation, the involvement of complement in age-related macular degeneration, hemolytic uremic syndrome, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, experimental forms of renal disease and clinical transplantation including kidney/pancreas transplantation.

The faculty consists of experts in the field of basic complement research and well known clinicians which offers us the possibility of in depth discussions on the role of complement in clinical medicine.

Additional information

The advanced ERA-EDTA CME Course “Complement in renal disease and transplantation” will be held on 25 April 2008 in the Leeuwenhorst Conference Center, close to Leiden. The center can be reached easily by air (Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport) or by public transportation.

The schedule will be as follows:
Arrivals are planned for Thursday 24 April, 2008 in the afternoon or early evening. Registration will be between 4-8PM on Thursday, dinner starts at 7.30PM.

The scientific programme will start at 8.30AM on Friday 25 April, 2008 and will end at 5PM.

At this point all participants have the following options:

  1. You can leave.
  2. You can stay overnight at the hotel and leave the next day.
  3. Participate in the social programme. For those who would like to stay another day, we plan to organize a visit to the Keukenhof flower gardens followed by the yearly flower parade which happens to be exactly on Saturday 26 April. During this day we will take a bus drive to different locations, including a lunch break. At the end of the day we will drop you off around 5PM at Schiphol airport or at the Leiden Central train station. The costs for this social event, including dinner on Friday evening, lunch, entrance to the flower garden, will be €100,- per person. This price does not include hotel costs on Friday evening. Visiting the bulb fields around this time of the year is really a great opportunity.
