The joint ERA-EDTA/Instituto Reina Sofía de la Fundación Renal symposium on “New challenges in the Understanding and Management of Chronic Renal Failure – from bench to patient” will be held in Madrid on the 11th -12th November 2004. This course is one of the frontier research ERA-EDTA sponsored activities. It is also the 11th symposium of its kind to be organised by the “Reina Sofia” Institute in Spain.

The “Reina Sofía” Research Institute is a multi-centre scientific body making up part of the “Fundación Renal Iñigo Alvarez de Toledo”, founded in 1994 and with Queen Sofía of Spain as its patron. It is made up of 15 units throughout Spain and its aim is to promote basic and experimental research into renal diseases and their treatment.

A total of 18 physicians and medical professionals will speak at and chair this symposium. It consists of 5 sessions and various important topics, such as research into renal insufficiency, analysis of gene expression in renal fibrosis, progression of chronic kidney disease, oxidative stress and cardiovascular damage in uraemia and finally, parathyroid glands, bone and the cardiovascular system in uraemia.

All ERA-EDTA members are welcome. Registration is free but the number of available places is limited. The places will be assigned on a first come first served basis.
