Benefits of regular walking exercise in advanced chronic kidney disease

In the 224th issue of NDT-E you will find several interesting novel full papers. In a paper published in J Clin Invest, Christiane D. Wrann et al. report that the transcription factor FOS-like antigen 2 is a critical regulator of leptin expression in adipocytes. In another interesting full paper, published in Kidney Int, Kim Zuidwijk et al. show that the density of myeloid dendritic cells during acute rejection could be an important risk factor for the long-term development of chronic changes and loss of graft function. In this issue of NDT-E you will also find three full papers published in the March issue of NDT. In the first of these papers, George C. Kosmadakis et al. present data that provide further support for the broad benefits of aerobic physical exercise in CKD. In the 2nd NDT paper Szu-Chia Chen et al. consecutively enrolled 505 CKD patients from their outpatient department of internal medicine and found that screening CKD patients by means of echocardiography may help identify a high-risk group of poor cardiovascular prognosis. In the 3rd full NDT paper Maureen A. Murtaugh et al. studied 1105 adults with CKD and concluded that high dietary phosphorus intake is not associated with increased mortality in moderate CKD. Finally, NDT-E present a full paper published in J Nephrology by Déborah S.S. Bui et al. who in a rat peritoneal infusion model show that the functional and histological peritoneal changes were significantly reduced by treatment with N-acetylcysteine.

In the 224th issue of NDT-E you will also find two oral presentations from the ERA-EDTA meeting in Prague 2011. In the first talk Greet Van Den Berghe, Louvain, Belgium discusses “GLYCEMIC CONTROL TO PREVENT AKI”. In the 2nd talk, Donal Reddan, Galway, Ireland discusses the “CHOICE OF FLUIDS AND PREVENTION OF AKI”.

Please also read the answers and comments of the calcific uremic arteriolopathy (calciphylaxis) poll by Dr. Paula Specht and Dr. Vincent Brandeburg and do the new poll on home-hemodialysis by Dr. Sandip Mitra and Dr. Jayanti Anu.
