NDT-EDUCATIONAL

Editorial issue 260

At the onset of the holiday season, let me first wish you and your families, all the best for 2014, as well as some quality time in the coming 2 weeks!

The five papers selected for this 260th issue of NDT-E cover a broad range of topics. P. Messa et al. first review in the Journal of Nephrology (December 2013) the current indications to parathyroidectomy in CKD patients before and after renal transplantation. Second, G.M. Danovitch reviews in Kidney International (November 2013) the high cost of organ transplant commercialism. Next H.C Rayner discusses in Nephrol. Dial. Transplant. (December 2013) the question: does community-wide chronic kidney disease management improve patient outcomes? C. Ponticelli then covers in Nephrol. Dial. Transplant (December 2013) Ischaemia-reperfusion injury: a major protagonist in kidney transplantation.

Finally, P. Arnouts  publishes a narrative  review in Nephrol. Dial. Transplant (December 2013) on  the use of  glucose-lowering drugs in patients with chronic kidney disease with emphasis on pharmacokinetic properties. As you can see, much food for thought and enjoyable reading the holiday season permitting.

The CME lectures selected from the Istanbul ERA-EDTA congress cover the following topics     Prof. Julio Pascal (Barcelona, Spain) first discusses: “Early versus late steroid withdrawal in kidney transplantation”. Prof. Silvio Sandrini (Brescia, Italy) next covers drug level monitoring and adjustment in kidney TP.

The other 2 presentations deal with lipids in CKD. Prof. David Wheeler (London, UK) first covers “LDL-cholesterol and CV risk in CKD: epidemiology versus clinical trials”. Finally, Prof. Thomoteus Speer (Homburg/Saar, Germany) reviews: “High-density lipoprotein – the myth of the «good cholesterol»”

Enjoy NDT-Edu and all the best for 2014
