The intent of the course is to provide nephrologists and other interested parties with a unique opportunity to master the basics of urine examination. It is our view that there are relatively few opportunities for learning the basics of urine examination available for nephrologists. Given the incredible importance that urine examination has in the evaluation of patients with kidney diseases, this lack of effort seems unjustifiable. We believe that every nephrologist working in the field of clinical nephrology should have a firm understanding of the basics of urine examination. Even more so, it would be preferable for nephrologists to be able to perform the urine examination themselves. Often this approach provides with more information than can be gained by urine examination in conventional laboratories, which are burdened by the sheer volume of urine samples they have to analyze. This approach provides the attending nephrologist with a much deeper insight into the kidney pathology of the patients he or she is attending to, enabling a more rational approach to the planning of further diagnostic procedures. We also believe that the basics of urine examination are not difficult to understand. We are confident that after the completion of our two day course, our participants will have a much firmer understanding of the basics of urine examination and interpretation and will be able to, if they choose to do so, start the process of learning to do the urine examination themselves. We have planned this course in collaboration with dr. Fogazzi, a well known and recognized expert in the field of urine examination, and some other colleagues working in Milan, Italy. This collaboration is a continuation of the combined efforts of dr. Fogazzi and Slovenian nephrologists that enabled the formation of urine laboratories as part of nephrology clinics in Slovenia, where nephrologists examine the urine samples of their patients.
