Short Description
In a total of 11 hours of interactive lectures (20 minutes lecture, 10 minutes discussion) and hands-on-workshops this scientific workshop covers the methodology, state of the art results and clinical applications of genetic epidemiology of chronic kidney diseases. After an introduction about the methodology of Genome-Wide-Association Studies (GWAS) and related genomic technologies, the participants will learn about and discuss the design of cohort studies required for genetic epidemiological research of common vs. rare diseases with a specific focus on diabetes cohorts and CKD cohorts. This part of the workshop contains a hands-on work-shop to interact on practical aspects of cohort study design and performance. Specifically, the workshops are chaired by the principal investigators of three actively recruiting cohort studies (Nationale Kohorte, AUGUR, DIACORE) with a subsequent visit to the recruitment centers of these studies. Further, the Invited Faculty includes Principal Investigators from several large cohort studies in Switzerland (Murielle Bochud: Colaus), France (Benedicte Stengel: Three-Cities), Finland (Per-Henrik Groop: FINNDIANE), Austria (Florian Kronenberg: MMKD) and Germany (Stefan Blankenberg: Gutenberg Health Study), who will all contribute in this hands-on-workshop in the discussion of optimal cohort design and management and scientific analysis. Next, the audience will discuss the state of the art of GWAS of kidney traits (e.g. eGFR, albuminuria, sodium balance) and kidney diseases (e.g. membranous and diabetic nephropathy, APOL1-related ESRD) in two sessions, with each lecture highlighting the clinical implications (e.g. the link between UMOD, salt and CKD in the general population). The final session is dedicated to GWAS findings of important kidney-related traits (obesity, age-related macula degeneration, lipids), thus providing the participants with insights into strategies from other major international GWAS efforts.
