Paul Gauguin: Ia orana Maria (Ave Maria) 1891
oil on canvas; 114 x 89 New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art

The theme of motherhood is often present in Gauguin's paintings, Paul Gauguin painted this oil during his first visit to Thaiti, in an allusive and fascinating mixture between different traditions; the simple gestures of both the holy mother with her child and the angel represent the search for a spirituality devoid of the heavy conditioning of the Churches. The motherhood is here not only the symbol of faith, but also the idea of absolute simplicity, and return to the nature, that inspired some of his best Thaitian works.
