Genetics in Renal Transplantation

Tenerife, Spain

October 2, 2004

New methods in genetic analysis are increasingly used in renal transplantation. Eduardo Salido will present the basics as well as the information provided by gene expression profiling and proteomics. Lorraine Racusen will make a critical analysis of the potential role of this new methods in the pathologic evaluation of graft biopsies. Armando Torres will update the results of association studies between different genetic polymorphisms and several outcomes; requirements to ensure scientific quality of association studies will be emphasized. Dany Anglicheau will talk about gene variants that may affect the bioavailability of immunosuppressive drugs, and Dr Campistol about nephrotoxicity of this drugs in genetically modified animals. Finally, Adolfo García Ocaña will present experimental data about the potential of the gene therapy approach to increase beta cell replication, function and survival, which may implement the use of islet transplantation in clinical practice.
