Aachen, Germany
Aachen is a very historic city (with Roman remains, natural hot springs as well
as a world-famous cathedral where all German emperors from 900 a.c. to about
1500 a.c. have been crowned) at the Western edge of Germany, located about 5
kilometres from the Dutch and Belgian border, i.e. highly international. The
city population is about 250,000 with about 50,000 students.

HOSPITAL DEPARTMENT University clinic of Aachen, Dept. Internal Medicine. It is a part of the Aachen Technical University, which is the biggest Technical University in Germany and particularly famous for their Engineering Departments.

1) Glomerulonephritis studies, in particular in IgA-Nephropathy.
2) Dialysis studies, focussing on alterations of leukocytes, coagulation as
well as mechanisms of uremic extraosseous calcifications.
3) Transplant studies, in particular involvement in various multicenter studies.

1) Studies on central mediators of renal disease, in particular growth factors
such as PDGFs or central transcription factors such as YB-1.
2) Studies on renal extracellular matrix proteins and metalloproteinases.
3) Studies on mechanisms of renal disease progression and diabetic nephropathy.
4) Studies on renal gene transfer as well as stem cells.
5) Studies on mechanisms of renal autoimmunity.

all over the world have worked for periods of ½ to 2 years in the unit
(e.g. T. Coimbra/Brazil, M. Kitahara/Japan, various colleagues from Cardiff/Wales,
P. Boor/Slovakia and currently: M. Popovska/Macedonia, E. Hamilton-Williams/Australia,
R. Song/China).
