Lyon (Lugdunum during roman time, also known as « La capitale des Gaules ») is an old french city established in 43 BC. This is the third city of France by the number of inhabitants (nearly 450000) and the second when consering the urban area (nearly 1 800 000). Lyon is located in a geographical crossroads between occidental Europe and is the capital of the Rhone-Alpes region that is the second french regional area for economy and population (nearly 6 150 000). This economic dynamism is strengthen by the close presence of Switzerland and Italy. Lyon has a very rich history past and is a famous gastronomic place. Some famous citizens of the city were Claude Bernard, famous physiologist well known to nephrologists, Auguste and Louis Lumière (inventors of the cinematograph in 1895), André-Marie Ampère (physicist and mathematician) and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry who wrote the famous novel “le Petit Prince”.

The department of Nephrology at Edouard Herriot Hospital is now headed by Pr Denis Fouque and was previously headed by Prs Traeger, Zech and Laville. The hospital is close to the University Claude Bernard. Many physicians of the department are also teaching at Lyon Medical School and are members of research units.

NEPHROLOGY ward: 22 beds + 5 outpatient daily care beds
CHRONIC DIALYSIS: 24 beds (+1 plasma exchange facility)
HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS: 100 (about 17000 sessions of dialysis per year)
PERITONEAL DIALYSIS PATIENTS: 50
