RESEARCH INTERESTS

CLINICAL RESEARCH

RESEARCH PROGRAMMESS AND PROJECTS LIST

Primary and secondary glomerulonephritis.
Clinical symptoms severity (hypertension and magnitude of proteinuria) and activity and chronicity indices in renal biopsy studies - impact on long-term course of primary glomerulonephritis. The significance IgG/IgM ratio in daily proteinuria for the treatment response and long-term prognosis in different types of glomerulonephritis.   Immunosupressive programs in the treatment of primary and secondary (lupus nephritis, vasculitis) glomerulonephritis - efficacy in long-term follow-up.
Haemodialysis.
Factors affecting cardiovascular morbidity and mortality of haemodialysis population - the significance of low fetuin-A level, hyperhomocysteinemia, ADMA (acyclic dimethylarginine), low-molecular protein-bound toxins (inoxyl sulphate, p-cresol, phenol) and inflammatory indices (IL-1, IL-6, IL-18  a.o.) in relation with pulse weave velocity (PWV) measurements.
Vascular access creation in high risk, elderly and diabetic haemodialysis patients - own original method of the native arteriovenous fistula formation with use of perforating vein connected end-to-end to radial artery in patient with destroyed superficial veins. Elaboration of the method of the wrist native arteriovenous fistula superficialization in obese patients.     http://www.asdin.org/Visitors/Nephrologybiblio/bib-SDVA.cfm
Peritoneal dialysis.
Peritoneal dialysis treatment of high risk patients (diabetics, with cardiovascular instability) - value of the PD-treatment and it’s impact on morbidity and mortality.
Patients with high permeability of peritoneal membrane - efficacy of continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis.
Removal of the low-molecular protein-bound toxins - comparison between peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis.
Quality of life of patients on HD- and CAPD-treatment. Individualization of renal replacement therapy in the elderly patients and diabetics.

Kidney allografts.
Cytodiagnostic of urinalysis for monitoring renal allograft injury.
Chronic allograft nephropathy - the effect of MMF-treatment.
Viral infection following renal transplantation (CMV, HSV, polyoma).

The role of genetic polymorphism of interleukins and co-stimulatory molecules.
Optimalization of immunosupression after renal transplantation e.g. early steroid withdrawal in the kidney graft recipients and replacement of calcineurin inhibitors by less nephrotoxic immunosupressive agents - conversion criteria.

BASIC RESEARCH

RESEARCH PROGRAMMESS AND PROJECTS LIST

Characterisitics of cytokines and growth factors pattern in kidney allograft biopsy specimens; relation to ischaemic/reperfusion injury, acute and chronic allograft rejection and calcineurin inhibitors toxicity
Cytokine gene polymorphism and intensity of acute and chronic kidney allograft rejection
Assessment of the kidney transplant recipients alloreactivity using ELISPOT assay
CTLA4 and CD40L expression on T lymphocytes in kidney transplant recipients
Indices of immunologic tolerance in the recipients with long-term functioning graft on minimal immunosupression
Neutrophils involvement in the pathogenesis of the primary and secondary glomerulonephritis
Localization of elastase deposits in renal tissue and assessment of relationship with urinary excretion

European Fellows programme

Short (1-2 month) well focused training programs either clinically or laboratory oriented:
specific trainig in the formation of different variants of arteriovenous fistulas and in the care or renal transplants recipients.

Long (at least 1 year) research fellowships: possibility of the application for Ph.D. fellowship.

Specify corresponding availability of grants: YES, possibility of the application for grants from Polish Governmental Committee for Scientific Research and funds from EU.

Specify if the Unit may provide help for accommodation: Yes.

Prerequisites for Fellowship

Language: English is compulsory, for patients care basic knowledge of Polish is desirable.

Work/Research experience: will be discussed individually with candidate.

Other prerequisites: possibility of preliminary course in Polish is offered.
